Shadbolt Centre for the Arts presents Burnaby Lyric Opera in famous double bill from February 25 to March 4

Puccini’s comedic Gianni Schicchi pairs with Leoncavallo’s tragic Pagliacci

Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is presenting two musical masterpieces, care of Burnaby Lyric Opera’s production team and the best of B.C.’s young professional opera singers.

The double bill, at the Shadbolt’s James Cowan Theatre from February 25 to March 4, features two classic one-act operas: Gianni Schicchi and Pagliacci.

The first short opera is Giacomo Puccini’s one-act comic tour de force, about greedy relatives fighting over the will of their recently deceased wealthy patriarch, Buoso Donatti, only to be tricked out of their inheritance by the ingenious scheming of Gianni Schicchi.

The second is Leoncavallo’s tragic portrayal of Canio, the clown who makes people laugh, while he himself is suffering.
