The Cunning Little Vixen, composed by Leoš Janáček and premiered in 1924, opens UBC Opera’s 2023-24 season in the historic Old Auditorium, which was also built in 1924. Shows take place from November 2 to 4 at 7:30 pm and November 5 at 2 pm.

Inspired by a comic strip titled The Cunning Fox, Janáček combined the story with his unrequited love for the married Kamila Stösslová. The libretto includes philosophical elements of the cyclical nature of life, a yearning to return to simplicity, and the struggle between nature and humanity.

When a forester traps a young fox and attempts to domesticate her, an uprising, a wedding, and tragedy all follow. With a colourful and majestic score influenced by Moravian folk songs, The Cunning Little Vixen is a bittersweet fable that takes its place as a modern classic. The opera is directed by Nancy Hermiston and conducted by Norbert Baxa.
