The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and UBC School of Music are presenting a collection of fall performances with live audiences in the Chan Shun Concert Hall.

The Chan Centre Presents and Wednesdays Noon Hours series return with programming that features a diverse range of Canadian performing artists across genres including UBC Music faculty members. Plus, UBC Music students will share a series of ensemble concerts featuring a range of repertoire.

Among the highlights of Chan Centre Presents are: vocalist and baritone ukulele player Desirée Dawson (September 24); Café Buenos Aires: Jose Franch-Ballester & Friends, featuring clarinetist and UBC Music faculty member Jose Franch-Ballester on October 1; and Kimmortal, a queer, non-binary Filipinx rapper and singer (October 22).

Kimmortal’s performance is part of a new Chan Centre initiative that highlights locally based independent and emerging artists who are exploring music in new and exciting ways.

Look, too, for Locarno—led by JUNO award-winning Tom Landa on vocals, guitar, and the 8-stringed jarana—on October 30.

Then, mark your calendars for Hasalala Danxalax on November 20. The first event in a special series curated by mezzo-soprano Marion Newman, four powerful operatic voices—Melody Courage, Asitha Tennekoon, Jonathon Adams, and Newman herself—celebrate the ever-growing repertoire of Indigenous composers while interpreting works from the Western canon and confronting the devastating impact of colonialism on the lives and culture of this land’s First Peoples.

Wednesday Noon Hours include Ad Mare Wind Quintet on September 22; Chinese musical styles with Silk Road Music on September 29; Vancouver Brass Orchestra Lite on October 6; and Four Jays—featuring four musicians at the top of their game, Julia Nolan (saxophone), Jane Hayes (piano), Jodi Proznick (bass), and Joan Blackman (violin)—on October 13. The noonhour presentations continue with 44th E-Gré Competition Winner on October 27 and

There Is a Season, featuring soprano Robyn Driedger-Klassen and pianist Terence Dawson, takes place on November 17.

UBC School of Music student ensemble concerts, meanwhile, are distinguished by their high level of performance. This fall, UBC Symphony Orchestra, Bands, Choirs, Opera ensembles and more will perform in the Chan Shun Concert Hall.
