Coastal Jazz & Blues Society hosts a special performance by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis at The Orpheum on October 10.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, featuring 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today, has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s resident orchestra since 1988. Under music director Wynton Marsalis, the group’s compositions and arrangements include works by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, and Charles Mingus, as well as new music from the group’s unrivaled collection of world-renowned composers and arrangers.

Marsalis, a legendary trumpeter, composer, and bandleader, has had a tremendous impact on the genre, with achievements including nine Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. His work as a musician, composer, and educator is motivated by his belief in jazz as a role model for democratic activity, and a lens that brings understanding to American culture.

Coastal Jazz boasts a long history with Marsalis, whose relationship with the non-profit organization dates back to its early years. He first performed at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 1986, captivating audiences with his extraordinary musicianship and vibrant onstage presence alongside headliners Miles Davis and Tito Puente.

Marsalis was born into the famed New Orleans musical family, and was playing the New Orleans Philharmonic by age 12. He moved to New York in 1979, fresh out of high school, and quickly traded his Julliard plans for a spot in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. At 19, Wynton hit the road with his own band, and has been touring the world ever since. He eventually returned to Julliard as the prestigious school’s founding director of jazz studies.

The upcoming show is set to include music director Marsalis on trumpet, along with fellow trumpeters Ryan Kisor, Kenny Rampton, and Marcus Printup; trombonists Vincent Gardner, Chris Crenshaw, and Elliot Mason; saxophonist-flutist-clarinetists Sherman Irby and Alexa Tarantino; saxophonist-clarinetists Chris Lewis, Abdias Armenteros, and Paul Nedzela; pianist Dan Nimmer; bassist Carlos Henriquez; and drummer Obed Calvaire.

Tickets are on sale now for this not-to-be-missed performance, and they can be found here along with more information on the concert.
