TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival announces new venue at Ocean Works, plus free concerts

Ocean Art Works Pavilion Granville Island transformed into outdoor venue; Jazz Around Town schedule released

Coastal Jazz & Blues Society has announced a new TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival venue at Ocean Art Works Pavilion (1531 Johnston Street, Granville Island). Transformed into an outdoor jazz venue with a licensed bar and late-night evening DJ sets, Ocean Art Works offers ticketed ($10 at the door) and free events throughout the festival.

Also announced, the festival shares the popular Free Jazz Around Town schedule at the Vancouver Art Gallery (two stages, 750 Hornby Street), David Lam Park (1300 Pacific Blvd), Performance Works (1218 Cartwright Street), Ocean Art Works (1531 Johnston Street), The Innovation Series at The Ironworks (235 Alexander Street), and free events at various venues with the North Shore Jazz Series.

Ocean Art Works’ 9 pm shows are sponsored in part by CHMC Granville Island and are part of the Granville Island Jazz series. The schedule is:

Free Jazz Around Town concerts at Vancouver Art Gallery’s Georgia Stage kick off at 12:30 pm with the last show at 7:30 pm, June 25and June 26; at the Sounds of Youth Stage, concerts start at 12 pm with last show at 5 pm, June 25 and June 26.

Georgia Stage free performances include: Sister Jazz Orchestra, Mary Ancheta Quartet, PANTAYO, Louis Cole Big Band, Ghost-Note, Jodi Proznick: New Horizons, Greasy G & The Poole Party featuring JAKITO!, Ludic, Tanika Charles, and Malika Tirolien.

David Lam Park: Free shows start at noon with the last performance at 8:45 pm, July 2 and July 3 and include: Jasper Sloan Yip, The Dardanellas, Blowout Band, Thus Owls, Jo Passed, The Suffers, KeAloha, Parlour Panther, Alvaro Rojas’ Gran Kasa, Tonye Aganaba, The Modelos, and Jeff Parker DJ set.

Performance Works: Free shows run 2:30 to 3:30 pm, June 24 to July 3, sponsored in part by CHMC Granville Island and part of the Granville Island Jazz series Performance Works. Performances include: Josh Zubot Quartet and Darius Jones, Orchid Ensemble, Kamil Piotrowicz Trio, Sunna Gunnlaugs Trio, Dan Wilson Quartet, Giveton Gelin, Michael Formanek Drome Trio, Andy Milne and Unison, OA4, Simon Millerd Sextet, and Jeff Younger’s Dark Matter Machine.

Ocean Art Works: Free shows run 4 to 6 pm, June 24 to July 3; free DJs go from 11 pm till late, June 24 and 25 and July 1 to July 3.

Granville Island Jazz Series Ocean Art Works free performances include: Terminal Station, Black Gardenia featuring Daphne Roubini, Audrey Ochoa Quartet, Spindle!, Kevin Romain’s Salience Network and Emma Augustsson, Emily Best, Under the Surface, Sharon Minemoto Quartet, Strange Worlds Trio, Todd Stewart Crescent Quartet, and Noah Walker Trio.

Ocean Art Works free DJ sets include: DJ KoaKeA and DJ Keilani Rose, DJ O-Show, DJ Handsome Tiger, DJ Kookum, and DJ Paisley Eva.

The Innovation Series: all free shows start at 5 pm, June 27 to July 1, with performances including Littles, PRIMARY TRIO, Ng and Ullén and Sholberg, Used Gowns, The Nausea, John Patton’s Parrallax, Dave Rempis (solo), and Why Choir.

North Shore Jazz Series: Civic Plaza (14th & Lonsdale), 1 pm, June 26 and July 2; Lynn Valley Village (1277 Lynn Valley Road), 2 pm, June 27;  West Vancouver Memorial Library (1950 Marine Drive), 7:30 pm, July 1.

North Shore Jazz Series free performances include: Joyce N’Sana, Kobo Town, Big Lazy, and Jamie Lee Trio.
