There’s something for everyone at Crafted Vancouver, the annual celebration of outstanding craft now running until May 25.

Here are a few highlights of things to see, do, and experience as part of the festival’s hybrid virtual and in-person programming for 2021.

Stitch with Richard McVetis is an online workshop on May 22 from 10 am to 12:30 pm PDT. You’ll learn a range of traditional hand embroidery techniques, plus a how and why of hand-stitching. The interactive workshop will explore the rhythms of stitching, the strengths of embroidery for drawing and mark-making; and the pleasure in having time to make.

On May 23 from 12 to 1:30 pm PDT, it’s Ornamentum 15th Anniversary Panel, with a discussion called Then and Now. Published twice a year, Ornamentum is the only magazine devoted to exploring the spectrum of decorative arts in Canada, from furniture, furnishings, ceramics, glass, metalwork, graphics, and textiles to aspects of architecture, industrial, interior and landscape design. A writer from Tofino, a ceramicist from Halifax, and an art curator from Saint John were all among the contributors to the first issue. Moderated by Rosalind Pepall, Then and Now will feature panellists Erin Lynn McMullan, Alexandra McCurdy, and Peter Larocque, as they look back over the last 15 years and discuss the landscape of decorative arts within Canada.

The Conversation Series’ Gallery Talks on May 20 at 10 am PDT, hosted by Cavaliero Finn, features Nicholas Lees from Cavaliero Finn, who manifests the boundaries between shadows in light in clay, and Vancouver textile artist Michelle Sirois Silver. “Subtle” is a word that describes both of the artists’ works, with process and the mark of the hand being fundamental to their practices. This talk will explore the importance of process, the idea of being part of a continuum, and how to nurture discipline without getting into a rut.

Exhibitions include Printmaker’s Mark at North Vancouver’s CityScape Community Space, a gallery exhibition hosted by North Van Arts running until May 29, and Make the World Again: Contemporary Textile Art from Australia, a virtual event to May 31 produced by the Australian Tapestry Workshop and curated by Kevin Murray.
