Early Music Vancouver is delighted to offer local music lovers the rare opportunity to experience France’s Diabolus in Musica live. Known for its beautifully ethereal sound, the award-winning ensemble performs in the concert A New Springtime of the World on October 28 at 7:30 pm at Christ Church Cathedral.

Founded in France in 1992, and under the direction of Nicolas Sansarlat, the award-wining Diabolus in Musica is one of the world’s pre-eminent ensembles for medieval music, appearing regularly at festivals in Utrecht, Boston, Ambronay and many others. The ensemble focuses on the study, interpretation, and performance of medieval music, from Gregorian chant to the magnificent polyphonies of the 15th century, while specializing in French music of the 12th and 13th centuries.

The concert title, A New Springtime of the World, is a reference by historian Georges Duby who said of France in the 12th century “a new springtime of the world blossomed on the old Latin stock”, referring to a time when the social order which prevailed before the year 1000 was replaced by the feudal system. In southern France, castles and monasteries were built, far from the declining influence of the king or the pope. Painting, sculpture, architecture, and music celebrated the beauty of the world in a new way.
