Elektra Women’s Choir celebrates the upcoming holiday season with its beloved annual tradition Chez Nous: Christmas with Elektra on December 2 at 7:30 pm at the Good Shepherd Church in South Surrey, and on December 3 at 3 pm at the Pacific Spirit United Church in Vancouver.

Audiences are invited to come experience a wealth of stellar choral music shared in the welcoming style of the Elektra Women’s Choir, led by artistic director Morna Edmundson. Whether at their performance in South Surrey or Vancouver, listeners can expect Elektra’s trademark program diversity with a lineup of music that spans from an anonymous 14th century composer to Joni Mitchell’s River.

Elektra will perform familiar Christmas melodies arranged by Winnie Brückner, Susan Edwards, Laura Hawley, Edward Henderson, Cassie Luftspring, Paul Nash, David Schreiner, Lily Storm, Joel Tranquilla, and Bernat Vivancos. The choir will also perform original seasonal works by Gerda Blok-Wilson, Jakob Handl, J. David Moore, and Stephen Smith.

Edmunson co-founded Elektra Women’s Choir in 1987 with Diane Loomer, and assumed the role of artistic director independently in 2009. Over its nearly four decades of performances, the 45-voice volunteer choir has been graced by over 200 singers from ages 17 to 79.

Elektra prioritizes community engagement, running such annual programs as the Mira Youth Mentorship, Choral Encounters festival, and Diane Loomer Choir. They also host a Reading Sessions of New Works event every two years, which provides a discovery and discussion platform for the creation of classically based women’s choir pieces.

Under Edmunson’s helm, the choir has engaged in several national and international performance opportunities. They were awarded first place in the Equal Voices – Women category of the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs in both 2010 and 2017.

In December 2020, Elektra collaborated with L.A.-based composer Shawn Kirchner and San Francisco choir WomenSing to co-produce a 70-minute Christmas winter solstice video titled The Light of Hope Returning, which will be available to stream for free during the holidays.

Tickets to see Chez Nous: Christmas with Elektra, plus single and season tickets for all concerts, are available at elektra.ca/concerts-events.
