The Cinematheque’s 2020 online edition of the European Union Film Festival kicks off November 13 with Germany’s box-office hit All About Me.

Directed by Oscar-winning director Caroline Link, the bittersweet story of a funny nine-year-old in 1970s Germany is just one in an array of streamed programming running to November 29. Together, the lineup allows you to travel from Belgium to Hungary to Estonia while staying safely socially distanced at home.

This year’s 27-film, 27-country roster ranges from romantic comedies to historical dramas to political thrillers. Directors include well-known masters as well as talented newcomers.

For the first time, the EUFF is available nationally. Each film will be “live” online for a 48-hour period, with some featuring exclusive filmmaker interviews. All movies will be presented in their original languages, with English (and, in some cases, French) subtitles available.

Highlights include Luxembourg’s Lost in the 80s, an irreverent documentary on an era of upheaval from EUFF returnee Andy Bausch, whose films Back In Trouble and Rusty Boys screened in past editions; Sweden’s Britt-Marie Was Here, starring legendary Swedish actress Pernilla August as a creature of habit whose life is shattered by her husband’s infidelity; Italy’s The Goddess of Fortune, a witty, trenchant tale about two men whose lives are thrown into unexpected terrain when an old acquaintance drops her two kids off to them; and iconic French cinema stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Anouk Aimée in The Best Years of a Life.

“For years we’ve tagged the EUFF in Vancouver as ‘Europe without the jet lag!’ And now film lovers don’t even have to take off from the couch or fly out the front door! We’re very pleased that in this shelter-in-place, social-distancing times, we’re still able to present this ever-popular annual celebration of European cinema,” says Jim Sinclair, executive and artistic director of The Cinematheque, which has hosted the EUFF on the West Coast since 1998.
