The Vancouver Fringe Festival 2020 is unfolding over select dates in October, November, and possibly December. See its website for info and COVID-19 procedures.

IF YOU LOVE the Netflix show Magic for Humans, you won’t want to miss Rob Teszka: Magic Dropout at the 2020 Vancouver Fringe Festival’s October Mini-Fringe. The Coquitlam-based magician goes far beyond sleight of hand, weaving cognitive psychology into tricks that fool the eyes.

Teszka’s background includes nearly a decade working in England, with regular spots at the Magicians Showcase at the London Improv Theatre, the Illusioneer Magic Theatre, and Craft Beer & Crafty Tricks at the Priory Arms.  He was an associate member of the Inner Magic Circle, hosting parlour shows and giving interactive tours of the museum as an assistant curator.

For his 60-minute “cautiously interactive” show at Performance Works, he has re-created his repertoire to make everything work within the constraints of the pandemic.

“Years ago I lived in England as an academic, researching the psychology of magic,” Teszka said in a release. “After publishing several journal articles, burnout forced me to leave just before getting my PhD. It’s taken three years to get into the Fringe Festival and I’m not letting anything force me to quit again—not even a pandemic.”

Every moment in the act where audience members have to pick a card from a deck, carry a prop, or hold hands has been redesigned to allow for physical distancing and for items to be sanitized or replaced between shows.

Rob Teszka: Magic Dropout features the magician’s irreverent takes on everything from mixing cocktails to ESP experiments within a broader theme of change and failure. It’s an all-ages show, but expect coarse language.
