Surrey Art Gallery, with 5X, are presenting the exhibition Masi Medicine: Joyful Nourishment featuring artists-in-residence Franz Seachel, Anjalica Solomon, and Alyssa Amarshi, running until June 18. Admission is free.

Masi Medicine: Joyful Nourishment brings together a visual diary of poetry, dance, and music. Exhibiting together for the first time are South Asian artists from Enable: Art Society, a nonprofit collective dedicated to uplifting art projects by emerging and marginalized voices.

The word “masi” means “aunt” in Punjabi, Hindi, Gujarati, and other South Asian dialects. Masi Medicine honours the masis in the artists’ own lives. Regardless of blood ties, masis have been instrumental in cultivating communal wellbeing and providing sisterhood.

Poets Franz Seachel and Anjalica Solomon, along with dancer Alyssa Amarshi, delve into identity, nourishment through play, and centring joy during the course of their residency.

Their sensory journey will feature digital projections of the artists’ work in development through poetry and movement, accompanied by soundscapes that invite audiences to slow down, breathe, and move with intention.

On Saturday, May 13, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Amarshi, Seachel, and Solomon will share the process of writing, freestyle looping, and a guided movement.

The emerging artists-in-residence share dance, poetry, and music activity in this interactive workshop offered as part of their residency. Participants are encouraged to playfully create on the theme of joyful nourishment.

Later, on Sunday, June 18, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., is a 5X Art Party with the Surrey Art Gallery. Bringing together some of the most exciting artists that Metro Vancouver’s South Asian art scene has to offer, this event is the ultimate place to meet emerging artists and experience music, art, and connection. Tickets are available at 5Xfest.com.
