Music on Main is presenting Gabriel Kahane in back-to-back performances of two deeply insightful albums: Book of Travelers on May 10 and Magnificent Bird on May 11. Both concerts feature Kahane’s vocals and piano music at 7:30 pm at the Annex Theatre.

Leading up to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Kahane decided to take a break from the digital world, and boarded a train the next day. Over 13 days, 31 states, 8,980 miles, and countless dining-car meals later, Kahane had spoken with more than 80 strangers from all walks of life, making songs from the stories he had heard—resulting in Book of Travelers.

Magnificent Bird began similarly as an ambitious year-long internet detox in 2019, but when the pandemic hit, Kahane’s journey was redirected inward towards self-discovery and disclosure.

Kahane will be joined by Vancouver’s Capilano String Quartet for the May 11 performance, featuring violinists Timothy Steeves and Jae-Won Bang, violist Marina Thibeault, and cellist Jonathan Lo.

Tickets are available at Music on Main.
