North Van Arts believes in the intrinsic value of the arts in everyday life. Participating in the arts improves overall physical and mental health, reduces stress, and provides a sense of connection to community. We support artists of all experiences and ability levels, from ages 6 to 106.

North Van Arts is announcing four online classes this spring in creative writing/visual art to help focus and calm the mind and make space for reflection or fantasy. Delivered live via Zoom with a recording to follow, the courses offer accessible pricing with a limited number of tickets at a discounted rate.

Mindfulness through Art Journaling starts May 12 with Joyelle Brandt. You’ll get to create a 5×7 art journal using whatever supplies you have on hand.

Stories of Home and Identity begins May 13 with creative nonfiction writer Taslim Jaffer. She will lead guided exercises and writing prompts exploring what home means to you.

Poetry for People starts May 17. In this six-week course local poet Andrew Warner will guide participants in weekly poetry prompts and writing activities for those who are beginning to write, currently writing, or who don’t identify as writers to practice calm in the present and share stories more confidently.

Imagined Worlds: Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror Writing kicks off May 17. Students will learn about the bones of speculative fiction, with a first draft of a new story done by the end of the class.
