From bebop to jazz to hip hop, free concerts by Vancouver’s coolest artists come to your home via Coastal Jazz and PuSh

With the cold days ahead, PuSh has concerts to warm you, presented and streamed for free from Performance Works in co-presentations with Coastal Jazz and Granville Island.

DJ Kookum & Sierra Baker and Missy D stream on February 19 at 8 pm PST.

The official DJ for Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Kookum is an open-format DJ who grew up listening to EDM and hip hop. The diverse-mix diva also has frequent club residencies and one-off gigs, always keeping things fresh, electric, and unpredictable. They’ll perform a 30-minute set with dancer, designer, community consultant, entrepreneur, artist, and storyteller Sierra Baker.

Missy D is a bilingual femcee born and raised around the Motherland of Rwanda, Cote d’Ivoire, and Zimbabwe. She’s been rapping since she was 11 years old in French and English and represents a blend of African cultures in her life force and in her music. Her trademark style of Rap & Soul fuses hip hop, rap, and R&B.

On February 20 at 8 pm PST, Gordon Grdina Trio performs. Grdina is a Juno award winning oud player and guitarist whose career has spanned decades and continents. He’s constantly exploring genres, from avant-garde jazz and free-form improvisation to contemporary indie rock and Arabic music. His singular approach to his instruments has earned him recognition from the highest ranks of the jazz/improv world.

Grdina has performed and collaborated with such notable artists as Gary Peacock, Paul Motion, Marc Ribot, Mark Helias, Mats Gustafsson, and Hank Roberts.

The Gordon Grdina Trio, featuring Tommy Babin bass and Kenton Loewen drums, has been performing together for the last 15 years. The three have worked with some of the world’s most inventive improvisers including Fredrik Ljunkgvist, Samuel Blaser, Colin Stetson, Michael Blake, Fred Longberg-Holm, Eric Boeren, Michael Moore, and Oscar Noriega.
