Surrey Art Gallery announces the exhibition Diane Roy: The Deep and the Shallows, now open for public viewing until September 3. An official opening reception and artist talk event takes place on July 8 from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, with Roy presenting about her artistic beginnings and evolution.

Diane Roy: The Deep and the Shallows brings together selections from 40 years of the artist’s work to address deteriorating ocean health, from the impact of industrialized fishing to climate change’s effects on coral reefs. The exhibition is full of 3D sculptures that primarily incorporates crochet, knitting, and weaving.

At the centre of Roy’s body of work is a colossal tapestry of a life-size blue whale’s head titled The Magnificent, created entirely with the artist’s own hands over the course of two years. Visitors are invited to measure themselves compared to the largest mammal on Earth as it floats above the gallery space.
