Surrey Art Gallery is announcing a special tour of Through the Lattice featuring exhibiting artist Tiffany Shaw and assistant curator Rhys Edwards on March 16 from 5 pm to 7 pm.

The tour will be followed by a reading of poems written in response to the exhibition by Dr. Dale Tracy, English faculty member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Through the Lattice is an acknowledgement of the lived environment during a period of economic precarity, political uncertainty, and pandemic insecurity. Each of the artists in the exhibition reflects upon the idea of place and its related aesthetics of style, ornament, design, pattern, and architecture.

Though diverse in their methods, the artists share a concern with the deeper meanings of space as well as its material construction.

Keeping in spirit with the themes of openness and sharing presented in Through the Lattice, the tour will take the form of a dialogue between Edwards and Shaw. Visitors will get an opportunity to learn about Through the Lattice in greater depth, including the curatorial approach to the exhibition and the broader range of themes it touches upon, such as dwelling, interconnectedness, and isolation.

Shaw’s own background in architecture, curation, and art provides additional points of view above and beyond the original scope of the exhibition, making for an enriching conversation.

Matching the poetic approach to the exhibition’s arrangement of artworks, Tracy will present a reading of new poems from her chapbook Lines That Open after the tour. Commissioned by Surrey Art Gallery in response to Through the Lattice, Tracy’s delicate words and poignant observation capture subtle aspects of many of the works on display.

“For this tour, I wanted to create a more open space for dialogue,” says Edwards. “As so many of the artworks are about breaking down the barrier between different disciplines and ways of thinking, or between inside and outside, this felt like the perfect opportunity to bring together voices who might not otherwise share a space and expand the scope of the exhibition beyond the gallery.”

Through the Lattice is on display at Surrey Art Gallery until March 26.

Admission for the tour is free, and more information can be found here.
