Two of the world's greatest Persian setar masters are coming to Vancouver for concerts on June 3 at the Kay Meek Centre for the Performing Arts and June 4 at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre.

That’s when Early Music Vancouver presents Kalhor & Tabassian in Dialogue on June 3 and June 4 for this rare opportunity to see these two artists together.

Kayhan Kalhor and Kiya Tabassian will perform an evening of improvised music played on the Persian setar—a stringed instrument which is a cousin of the European lute and Indian sitar and traces its roots back to pre-Islamic Persia. It is made from thin mulberry wood and its fingerboard has more than 20 moveable frets. In its modern form, the setar has four strings, and is the preferred instrument of Sufi mystics because of its delicate sound.

Kalhor is a five-time Grammy nominee and Grammy winner who has been credited with popularizing Persian music in the West. He’s co-founder of the renowned Masters of Persian Music and a founding member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Tabassian, co-founded the acclaimed Ensemble Constantinople.
