Here’s something music fans don’t see very often: a concert featuring two very different drum-and-trumpet duos with two very different approaches.

Fans of jazz drumming and trumpet playing will not want to miss this rare live performance featuring Ted Poor and Cuong Vu with Kenton Loewen and JP Carter. The accomplished artists will share a double-bill at BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University on February 22 at 8 pm.

Hailing from Seattle, drummer Poor and trumpeter Vu will present an immersive show with projections by Abigail Portner covering the entire stage. Poor’s adventurous, soulful drumming has seen him collaborate with Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, My Brightest Diamond, and Andrew Bird. Poor’s debut album, You Already Know (New Deal/Impulse!), was released last year. Vu has loaned his trumpet playing to such wide-ranging artists as Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, and Pat Metheny, with whom he has won two Grammy Awards. As a leader, Vu has released eight recordings, each making best-of lists in media such as the New York Times, New Yorker, BBC and Downbeat

Two of Vancouver’s most in-demand improvisers, Loewen (Dan Mangan) and Carter (Destroyer) are celebrating the release of their album It Becomes Us. Featuring improvisations as well as “classics” by Sonny  Sharrock, Ornette Coleman, and others, the album is the debut release from Tim Reinert’s new Vancouver-based label The Infidels.

Tickets, $30, and more details are at capilanou.ca/centre.
