In its final concert of the season, the Vancouver Cantata Singers is hosting a rare presentation of Amy Beach’s Grand Mass in E-flat major with special guests the Allegra Chamber Orchestra.

Premiered in Boston in 1892 by the Handel and Haydn Society orchestra, this large-scale choral and orchestral work was the first of its kind by a female American composer. It went unperformed for nearly a century after its premiere, and now, the Vancouver Cantata Singers showcases the monumental piece full of vibrancy and pathos.

Beach was born in Henniker, New Hampshire in 1867, and led a vibrant career as both a concert pianist and symphony-orchestra composer until her death in 1944.

The upcoming Vancouver premiere of Grand Mass in E-flat major takes place on April 27 at 7:30 pm at Pacific Spirit United Church in Kerrisdale. More details can be found online via the Vancouver Cantata Singers, and tickets are available here.
