Vancouver Chamber Choir presents REFLECTIONS on May 12 at 7:30 pm at Pacific Spirit United Church
VANCOUVER CHAMBER CHOIR is closing out the 2022-23 season with a cool concert: REFLECTIONS transcends geographical and musical borders between Nordic lands, celebrating the northern identity.
It’s an especially exciting performance, as it kicks off the ensemble’s European tour to Estonia and Finland.
On the program are works by Canadian and Nordic composers, including the world premiere of Snowdrops, a commission by VCC’s composer-in-residence, Matthew Whittall. The Canadian-Finnish artist, who’s based in Helsinki, fuses a variety of influences in his music, including Old and New World, Western and non-Western, sacred and secular, and classical, folk, and popular. He also incorporates extramusical imagery ranging from natural phenomena to poetry and landscape art.
One Black Spike by the late Vancouver composer Jocelyn Morlock will also be performed.
Cree-Dene composer Sherryl Sewepagaham’s Nitohtamok Askîy (Listen to the Land) is among the evening’s other pieces, along with Vancouver composer Don Macdonald’s Pacem, Arvo Pärt’s …which was the son of …, and Les Rêveries by Finland’s Mikko Nisula. Works by Estonia’s Cyrillus Kreek, Victoria’s Chris Sivak, the late Canadian legend Healey Willan, and Alberta’s John Estacio, among others, round out the musical experience.
