A pillar of the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s educational and outreach programming, its annual Conductors’ Symposium is an opportunity for university, school, church, and community choir directors from around the world to receive advanced training in choral conducting by taking part in masterclasses with one of Canada’s premier professional choral ensembles.

This year, for the 43rd annual edition, Vancouver Chamber Choir is delighted to welcome Christina Hutten as co-instructor and guest organist. Hutten will be joining Artistic Director Kari Turunen to oversee rehearsals and to provide insight on choral techniques, conducting gesture, score interpretation, and Baroque performance practice in preparation for the final concert, entitled THE BAROQUE AFFECT.

The performance takes place on Friday, February 10  at 7:30 pm at Pacific Spirit United Church.

With a focus on Baroque repertoire, the weeklong program consists of music written between 1640 and 1740. While the emphasis is on the German tradition, time will be taken throughout the week to make forays to the French, English, and Italian Baroque periods. All of the music on the program was written for the church—some of it is for specific liturgical occasions, while some of it is more generic by nature.

The final concert will feature the five young conductors (Andrew Pickett, Bláthnaid Conroy Murphy, Jeffrey Chan, Melanie Yirenkyi, and Michael Denomme) as well as the two co-instructors on the podium.
