The Vancouver Chamber Choir is presenting The Godfather, a concert of works from the 15th and 16th centuries, at St. Philip’s Anglican Church on May 24 at 7:30 pm.

The starting point of The Godfather is Josquin des Prez’s late-1490s chanson “Nymphes des bois”, also known as “La Déploration de Johannes Ockeghem”. An elegy to Ockeghem, who is regarded as one of the greatest European composers of the previous generation, what makes the work truly exceptional is that it lists several of the leading composers of the time: des Prez, Antoine Brumel, Pierre de la Rue, and Loyset Compère.

The upcoming concert introduces these composers to audiences while highlighting rarely heard 15th-century music. Eight singers from the Vancouver Chamber Choir will perform the works, and artistic director Kari Turunen will provide commentary throughout about how musical ideas are developed from one generation to the next.
