Vancouver Chamber Choir is thrilled to announce the release of This Delicate Universe, a stunning and novel new cinematic choral film.

This Delicate Universe is now available to enjoy in the comfort of your own home at VANCC Digital, Vancouver Chamber Choir’s on-demand viewing platform.

This Delicate Universe is a five-movement choral symphony by Seattle-based composer Eric Banks set to poetry by Constantin Cavafy (sung in both Greek and English).

As a composer, conductor, translator, vocalist, linguist, and ethnomusicologist, Banks has garnered international acclaim as one of the most creative choral musicians in the United States for his unwavering commitment to music for unaccompanied voices.

Cavafy is widely considered the most distinguished Greek poet of the 20th century. The the son of a wealthy Greek shipping magnate who spent most of his life in Alexandria and Istanbul, he is best known for his poetic recreations of classic images of ancient Greece—and is Banks’s favourite poet.

The five poems that inspired Banks’s magnificent compositions are: “I have brought to art”; “In this place”; “The morning sea”; “An epic in the heart”; and" “Beside an open window”.

The music of the Greek sections is mostly in Arabic scales, while the English sections are mostly modal, giving the whole work an ambiguous harmonic character.

The film was shot on location at Brock House Society, a 1912 heritage building situated on two and a half acres of waterfront property at the eastern edge of Jericho Beach. It is directed by Javier Badillo, a Venezuelan-Canadian film writer-director whose works have been shown internationally.

This Delicate Universe is a beautiful meditation on nature and love. It is an exploration of the interconnectedness of all things and a celebration of the natural world and the intimate relationships we experience.

VANCC Digital includes an In Conversation video with Kari Turunen, Banks, and Badillo for free. The digital program also contains all of the texts and translations as well as Turunen’s program notes.
