Vancouver Chopin Society is about to celebrate a milestone, with its silver anniversary taking place this coming season. And what a lineup of artists and performances the VCS has in store for local audiences to mark the remarkable occasion.

There will be a return visit by Canada’s own Charles Richard-Hamelin and the sensational Zlata Chochieva. There’s the Vancouver debut of Ukrainian pianist Vadym Kholodenko; Polish pianist Tomasz Ritter (gold medalist of the first International Chopin Competition for historic instruments); and Japan’s Kyohei Sorita, silver medalist and the artistic find of the 2021 International Chopin Competition. Dang Thai Son, gold medalist of the 1980 International Chopin Competition, will appear for the first time under the auspices of the Vancouver Chopin Society.

To celebrate this watershed year, Vancouver Chopin Society has commissioned a reproduction of a bust of Chopin, originally made by Polish sculptor and painter Waclaw Szymanowski, whose iconic statue of Chopin stands in Warsaw’s Lazienki Park. This beautiful piece of art will be unveiled in a special fundraising event on September 26 at the Vancouver Academy of Music. There will be a special performance by Richard-Hamelin as well as a reception to follow. Details of this event can be found on the VCS website.

On April 16, 2023, the society will “officially” celebrate its 25th anniversary with a post-concert reception for all ticket-holders following the debut recital of Tomasz Ritter. As well, distinguished Polish musicologist Benjamin Vogel will give a pre-concert lecture comparing today’s pianos with instruments from Chopin’s time.
