Vancouver Folk Music Festival is fast approaching. The 2022 edition takes place July 15 to 17 at gorgeous Jericho Beach Park on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples – Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, and the beloved home of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nation.

With the full weekend lineup having been previously announced, here’s a look at the headliners that are kicking things off on Friday, July 15.

The Evening Main Stage gets off to a 5:45 pm start, with a Musqueam Ceremonial opening featuring Thelma Stogan and family.

From 6 to 6:55 pm, it’s the The Bros. Landreth. The Juno-winning sibling duo comprises Joey and David Landreth. The pair’s newest release,  Come Morning, marks a rebirth and refinement of the band's blend of North American roots music and harmony-heavy soul.  Come Morning finds the brothers lacing their melody-driven songs with layers of atmospheric synth, organ, and textured guitar. The group's previous albums shone a light on their strength as a live act, capturing the spontaneity and sonic stomp of a band of hard-touring road warriors. Come Morning sketches a markedly different picture, showcasing the introspection and clarity that comes with a long period of rest.

From 7:15 to 8:10 pm, Robben Ford performs. One of the premier electric guitarists today, For is particularly known for his blues playing with deep jazz influences. A five-time Grammy nominee, he has played and toured with artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Susan Tedeschi, Keb Mo, and many others.

From 8:30 to 9:20 pm, Frazey Ford takes to the stage. Ford was a founding member of alt-folk band The Be Good Tanyas who  launched her solo career in 2010. Ford is revered for her soulful voice, captivating live show, and immersive lyrical storytelling. Her latest album, U Kin B the Sun, highlights her unbridled full-throated ebullience that takes listeners down to where the soul rivers run deep. “

And from 9:45 to 11:00 pm, the one and only Taj Mahal brings his amazingness to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Taj Mahal  is a towering musical figure who embodies the blues. A 2017 Grammy win for TajMo, his collaboration with Keb' Mo', underscored his undiminished relevance more than 50 years after his solo debut. Blues Hall of Fame membership, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association, and other honours punctuate his résumé. Taj Mahal transcended the blues not by leaving them behind, but by revealing their magnificent scope to the world. We are ecstatic to have him join VFMF this summer.
