Vancouver New Music is thrilled to present METAXENAKIS, a celebration of the life and influence of Iannis Xenakis.

A visionary artist, architect, and philosopher, Xenakis (1922-2001) made an indelible imprint on the arts in the 21st century.

The 2022 festival takes place October 21 to 23 at the ANNEX at 8 pm each night, with artist chats at 7:15 pm each night.

Festival highlights include a solo performance by Japanese percussion virtuoso Kuniko Kato (October 23) and Sirens, a live audio-visual set that maps fluctuations in global economic data by collaborators Novi_sad and Ryoichi Kurokawa (October 22).

Local favourites Plastic Acid Orchestra collaborate with violist Stefan Smulovitz (October 21) to present two brand new pieces for orchestra and electronics. Rounding out the program are solo performances by Jacob Audrey Taves (October 21), Sara Gold (October 22) and Giorgio Magnanensi (October 23) that will sculpt the performance space with electronic and electroacoustic sounds diffused through a large multi-channel speaker array.

The three-day festival is part of a transcontinental centenary celebration of Xenakis’ life and work. METAXENAKIS will offer six performances by local and international artists inspired by Xenakis’ artistic and philosophical legacy.
