VIFF’s Back to the 80s movie marathon has reached its midway mark, and some of the most memorable films of the decade are coming up on the program; that includes Terry Gilliam’s Brazil (1984), David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986), James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), and Jonathan Demme’s Something Wild (1986).

The mid-80s saw the first stirrings of what became a vigorous independent film scene. Gus van Sant’s 1985 debut feature Mala Noche was an early example of New Queer Cinema, and it wasn’t long before Jim Jarmusch and Spike Lee were making waves with Down by Law and Do the Right Thing, respectively. All three films screen in August; and Kathryn Bigelow’s 1986 modern-day vampire movie Near Dark also gets a rare outing, on 35 mm.

Don’t miss the film talks on the lineup, including Emily Carr professor Alla Gadassik’s rundown of the animation in Who Framed Roger Rabbit on August 18.

Tickets and more information on the films can be found here.
