Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) presents director-screenwriter Sarah Vos’s fly-on-the-wall documentary White Balls on Walls at the VIFF Centre on June 7 at 6:30 pm, June 9 and 10 at 3 pm, and June 11 at 8 pm.

When Vos started filming in 2019 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Netherlands’ museum of modern art, 90% of the organization’s collection was the work of white men.

The museum’s recently appointed director, Rein Wolfs, determined that redressing this imbalance would be his top priority. But that announcement left greater questions, such as whether the quest for diversity and representation impacts the jobs of curators, and whether an artist’s gender and skin colour are criteria for evaluating their art.

White Balls on Walls is a shrewd, ironic, objective temperature gauge on the highly politicized cultural battle over “woke” values.
