Since 1994, The Dance Centre’s 12 MInutes Max series has been fostering experimentation and new work.

Now the innovative program of short pieces is finding vivid new life online via Zoom, with the next 12 Minutes Max Studio Showing taking place March 31 at 6 pm; details and tickets are here.

Inspired by an idea pioneered at Seattle’s On the Boards back in 1979, the Dance Centre project today offers three modules every season. Each is overseen by two facilitators who select up to four emerging artists; those creators in turn receive studio space at Scotiabank Dance Centre to develop their works, with guidance from the facilitators.

The next studio showing is the culmination of the latest module, spotlighting pieces by Luciana D’Anunciacao & Kelly McInnes, Yvonne Chew, and SatisFACTORY Dance. The facilitators are Kokoro Dance and Vancouver International Dance Festival’s Barbara Bourget and Kinesis Dance somatheatro’s Paras Terezakis.

The new works have come to life adhering to full COVID protocols in the studio. Each piece has been pre-filmed, with a chance for discussion at the online showing—offering the feedback that’s also an integral part of 12 Minutes Max.
