San Francisco's world-renowned Alonzo King LINES Ballet makes a live return to the Vancouver stage on October 29 and 30.

In this presentation by the Vancouver International Dance Festival, local audiences will get the chance to see two works by the visionary choreographer.

Eight dancers take pride of place in his The Personal Element, a piece set to a piano score by Jason Moran. The work allows the viewer to marvel at the mix of movements. At its heart, it’s an ode to connection—and an invitation for the viewer form a personal connection with it.

The other half of this double bill is AZOTH—the name given by ancient alchemists to mercury, and believed to be the essential agent of transformation in alchemy. Working from that theme of transformation, the choreographer, with composer-pianist Jason Moran and jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd, creates an unforgettable dialogue between movement and jazz-inflected music. The show is set off with striking lighting.

VIDF has brought the dynamic company to town on three other occasions, starting in 2008.

Thirty-nine years of outstanding, multi-disciplinary collaborations for the stage place Alonzo King LINES Ballet at the forefront of artistic innovation in contemporary ballet.
