After moving into its new home on Granville Island earlier this year, Arts Umbrella is gearing up for its first fall season in its 50,000 net-square-foot state-of-the-art facility.

From intergenerational singing to the basics of hand drumming to post-secondary acting prep, the sheer number of new classes the stunning space can accommodate is remarkable. Here are a few courses on offer this autumn:

Parent & Me Creative Dance (3 months to 6 years): Arts Umbrella is now hosting classes for babies. Floor time, tummy time, and dancing in arms allow for gentle and playful connections that nurture baby's neurological, social, emotional, and physical development.

Intergenerational Choir: Open to students and caregivers ages 8+, this is a chance to sing together as a family—and the first class of its kind in Canada. Arts Umbrella’s studios exceed industry standards for clean air, and its instructors will guide people of all levels through the joy of singing together. There will also be public performances.

Parent & Me to Parent Free (Age 3): Sometimes children need time to transition to being comfortable in the studio on their own. Arts Umbrella is launching these new options for Creative Drama and Imagination Through Movement in which parents, guardians, or caregivers and children will begin classes working together. Over time, students will stay in class on their own to create and explore with their peers.

Dance for Musical Theatre (Ages 12 to 19): Young actors of all experience levels will develop and hone ballet and jazz technique while exploring classic and contemporary Broadway choreography to build their capacity as multi-disciplinary musical-theatre performers.

Percussion Ensemble (Ages 12 to 19): Starting with the basic mechanics of hand drumming, students will build a strong sense of tempo and technique. They will honour the foundations of western music by exploring sound from local Indigenous and world cultures, led by qualified instructors and guests connected to these communities.

Acting Prep - Post-Secondary: This six-week program is designed for aspiring actors who are serious about a career in the industry.

Other classes include Physical Theatre: Mask & Clown (Ages 9 to 12); Masterclass Workshop Series, from puppetry to spoken-word poetry (Ages 12 to 19); Scene Study: Musical Theatre (Ages 12 to 19); Sketch Comedy Intensive (Ages 11 to 16); The Actor’s Film Troupe, (Ages 13 to 19); Young Directors Program (Ages 13 to 19, admission by application); and much more.
