Astrolabe Musik Theatre is proud to present the Canadian premiere of U.K. composer George Benjamin’s chamber opera Into the Little Hill, May 19 and 20 at the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre, SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.

A contemporary re-telling of the classic Pied Piper tale, Into the Litttle Hill is an unflinching look at our response to the “Other”, focusing on a mysterious stranger who rids a town of its rats, only to also make its children disappear when his promised payment is withheld. It asks, What are the consequences when we refuse to “pay the piper” and accept responsibility for the outcomes of our actions?

Its six characters are sung by Chinese-Canadian mezzo-soprano Emma Parkinson and Vancouver soprano and Astrolabe artistic director Heather Pawsey.

The unique orchestration for this production, a co-presentation with SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs—includes bass flute, basset horns, mandolin, and banjo. The multi-disciplinary staging incorporates dance artists Juolin Lee, Daria Mikhalyluk and Hana Rutka. Leslie Dala conducts, with choreography by Idan Cohen of Ne.Sans Opera and Dance.
