Dumb Instrument Dance presents Ahhm, Asian Heritage Month at Morrow (910 Richards Street) from May 4 to 29

AN INSPIRING ARRAY of performance and art runs for the length of Asian Heritage Month at cozy Morrow, the intimate performance space run by Dumb Instrument Dance’s Ziyian Kwan at 910 Richards Street.

As part of the series called Ahhm, Kwan herself performs The Odd Volume May 10 to 14 from 7 to 8 pm in the Volume Vulva Verve program. That solo, about resistance to assimilation and displacement, pairs with Taiko artist Kage’s Itadakimasu, about how food intersects with ancestral teachings and community, and how this is being threatened by colonial and capitalist forces.

May 6 and 7, 2 to 6 pm, Sarah Wong hosts Pillow Whispers, transforming Morrow into a makeshift library, filled with books by Asian writers and decorated with pillows and blankets.

May 26 to 28, don’t miss another double bill called Bowl of Jasmine. It features Juolin Lee’s Luna, a dance ode to her matcha green Tatung Rice Cooker, a piece of traditional Taiwanese kitchenware and one of the first things her mother received from a distant relative after arriving in Canada 10 years ago. It pairs with Sujit Vaidya’ss Śṛṅgāra, which explores memories and sensations around Indian jasmine, with responses from poet Nhylar and accompaniment by Mark Takeshi McGregor on flute.

May 29, drop in for food favourites from the Filipinx community, hosted by Joyce Rosario and Anjela Magpantay. It’s free, there’s a Karaoke machine, and it’s open to all ages.

There is much, much more—including a poetry evening and Filipina storyteller and comedian Monica Ogden's solo show Monica vs. The Internet: Tales of a Social Justice Warrior. And make sure to check out the Asian Confectionary, a collection of art, sundries, and self-published books, curated by Kwan, Sarah Wong and Juolin Lee all month long.
