Exceptional Finnish dancers Maria Nurmela and Ville Oinonen are bringing their work The Days to BC Movement Arts Society’s North Island Contemporary Dance Series.

Excitingly, The Days sees its North American premiere in Sointula, the remote Finnish settlement established early in the last century, on June 17 and 18, at its original Finnish Organizational Hall. BC Movement Arts then presents The Days in Port McNeill Lions Hall for a performance June 19, and then ‘Namgis Lawrence Ambers Memorial Recreation Centre in 'Namgis Nation/Alert Bay on June 21.

Commissioned from London-based choreographer Theo Clinkard, the duet captures a world of ever-shifting negotiations, complex feelings, and comic disconnection.

The piece is constructed from a singular physical concept that sustains throughout the work. Caught in an impossible loop of absurd and heartfelt exchanges, the performers’ journey takes the form of a lifetime shared, with all its care, resilience, and the desire for connection.

The project transcends simple performance, engaging with local communities and diffusing the hierarchies between different bodies as performers and movers. On stage, Nurmela and Oinonen are joined by two honoured community participants, a man and a woman aged over 65 years, in each city of performance.

The shows are a partner presentation with Nordic Bridges 2022 in collaboration with Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre. After the above North Island dates, The Days heads to Vancouver for two shows, June 24-25 presented by The Dance Centre (with BC Movement Arts).
