The Dance Centre’s latest online DanceLab features an exciting new work in progress by Vancouver-based choreographer and dancer Rachel Meyer.

Streaming on demand from June 29 at 5 pm tp July 6 at 5 pm, the studio sharing gives a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of her new Mama, do we die when we sleep?

The piece was inspired by Meyer’s two-year-old daughter who asked: “Do we die when we sleep?” and explores the emotion of wonder.

Meyer is well known to Vancouver arts audiences, having previously danced with Ballet BC for six years, and is now establishing a reputation as an independent choreographer. She performs in this work along with Stéphanie Cyr, Josh Martin, and Calder White. The music is by James Maxwell.

This on-demand digital stream will share excerpts of the work in progress, as well as a pre-recorded conversation with Meyer and some of her artistic team. The full work will be presented at the Dancing on the Edge Festival in July.

The Dance Centre’s DanceLab research program has been running since 2002. Every year, five to seven dance artists receive fully subsidized studio space to experiment and develop new ideas with collaborators from different disciplines, culminating in an informal public studio showing.
