This Is Not a Ceremony plus Enter the Dragon equal a banner Thursday at The Polygon Gallery, July 21

The stunning VR experience is followed by an outdoor screening of kung fu’s finest film

The Polygon Gallery premieres the VR Experience This Is Not a Ceremony from 4 to 8 pm and screens Enter the Dragon outside as part of the Deckchair Cinema series, with preshow music by RHEK, 7 to 11 pm, all on July 21

WALK-IN SPOTS only are available for the Vancouver premiere of This Is Not a Ceremony tomorrow afternoon and early evening at The Polygon Gallery.

In the virtual-reality experience, watched through headsets, Niitsitapi artist Ahnahktsipiitaa (Colin Van Loon) immerses audiences in oral storytelling. In the 360-degree world that he conjures, viewers plant their feet in a fire as a spirit buffalo gallops around, or gaze up at a night sky while a campfire flickers at their feet.

The visually stunning cinematic work from the NFB caused a buzz at the Sundance and Tribeca film festivals this year for its ability to transport audiences into another world that sits between past, present, and future, with tricksters, matriarchs, and buffalo guiding the journey. All that, while venturing into the darker history of colonialism. (See trailer below.)

Look for performers Taran Kootenhayoo and Tawahum Bige, as well as late elder and Indigenous rights leader Lillian Howard.

Drop-ins can try for a viewing between 7 and 8 pm, when The Polygon will try to take as many walk-ups as possible.

That indelible experience is followed later with a sunset screening of one of the most kick-ass kung-fu-fighter films of all time: Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon—a film that, tragically, was also its star’s untimely swan song.

All action, gloriously overstyled, and iconic to the max—popcorn-perfect entertainment for a summer evening.

The screening takes place, as it does every Thursday all summer, out under the stars on Cates Deck in front of the Gallery. Bring a blanket or low chairs, with seating available on a first-come, first-serve basis. A concession stand offers snacks, beer, and wine. Your donation also includes admission to the gallery and its mind-expanding summer exhibition Ghosts of the Machine.
