VANCOUVER’S JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL is back for 2023, when Black Culture Celebration hits Sunset Beach on June 17 from 11 am to 10 pm.

Leading musicians like Kardinal Offishall, Vancouver’s Rascalz, Maestro (whose Symphony in Effect, was the first certified platinum album by a Black Canadian artist) four-time-Juno-winner Choclair, and Checkmate & Concise are joining the local festivities.

The richness and diversity of Black culture are the focus at the event produced by Go Supernova and 8.O Entertainment.

Other highlights include dance performances, cultural displays, visual-art exhibits, fashion, and a marketplace. There will be a beer garden and a range of food by Black purveyors, including those specializing in the cuisines of Jamaica, Ghana, and beyond.

Juneteenth is the name of a U.S. holiday celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people. On that date in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger led the Union Soldiers to Galveston, Texas to announce the end of the war and the freedom of all enslaved people.

“We are excited the Black Culture Celebration is returning to Vancouver bigger and better than ever, with an incredible roster of talent, vendors and community partners to help educate and celebrate the diversity that makes our community so rich and vibrant,” Nova Stevens, CEO and co-founder of BCC, says in a release.
