In honour of International Dance Day on April 29, The Dance Centre is presenting a day of varied events that rejoice in the art of movement.

Initiated in 1982 by UNESCO, International Dance Day is marked annually with events across Canada and globally. April 29 commemorates the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), regarded as the founder of modern ballet.

Highlights for this year’s program include Kinesis Dance somatheatro’s community project Aethernet, and students from Gladstone Secondary School’s dance program, in outdoor showings at šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square (formerly the Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza).

Additionally, a performance of Dance//Novella’s innovative When The Walls Come Down will be shown at the Scotiabank Dance Centre, performed in ASL with English voiceovers—making it accessible for hearing and deaf audiences alike.

Studio showings of work by Anusha Fernando’s Shakti Dance Society, Carla Alcántara and Kaili Che, and Sarah Hin Ching U will also be held at the Scotiabank Dance Centre.

Full details are available via The Dance Centre.
