RESTAURANTS ARE FINDING all sorts of creative ways to keep the doors open amid the pandemic, and one of them is a new Monthly Wine Menu at Vancouver’s Provence Marinaside.

The series highlights rare BC wines—those that are hard to find by the glass, whether it’s due to small production lots, the wine being out of stock, or picks that are priced out of range. They’re then paired with dishes inspired by the wine (not the other way around, as is usually the case) by Provence owner-chef Jean Francis Quaglia and chef de cuisine Sheldon Maloff.

The second edition of the series, November features CheckMate Artisanal Winery. The Oliver winery grows grapes in the Jagged Rock Vineyard on Black Sage Bench, an area marked by stone-free soil formed by glacial deposits on the ancestral territory of the Syilx People of the Okanagan Nation. Under winemaker Philip McGahan’s lead, CheckMate has earned two consecutive 100-point vintages for its Little Pawn Chardonnay (2015 and 2016 vintages).

The menu’s first course is Dungeness crab salad with sherry butter, apple and celeriac, served with CheckMate Little Pawn Chardonnay 2015, which was aged for 16 months in 47-percent French oak. Second course features veal tournedos with grilled radicchio, confit tomato, mashed edamame with a blue cheese and green peppercorn sauce. It’s being paired with CheckMate End Game Merlot 2014, made from hand-picked and -destemmed grapes. The wine is barrel-aged for 21 months in 100 percent new French oak.
The November CheckMate Wine Menu is $57, with pairings for an additional $30 (petit pour) or $58. Wines can also be purchased individually by the glass or bottle.

Provence has a regular dine-in menu, takeout menu, and French Food Made Easy kits. It is supporting the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre through meals and funds along with a donation option on its website
