The Chinese Restaurant Awards’ 2021 Dining for the Feast of Fortune runs from February 8 to 21 at various venues.

TO CELEBRATE THE Year of the Ox, the Chinese Restaurant Awards have teamed up with some of Greater Vancouver’s most popular dining establishments to raise funds for new St. Paul’s Hospital and Health Campus.

“Lunar New Year celebrations signify a farewell to the old and a welcome to the new,” CRA president Craig Stowe said in a release. “The year of 2020 has really highlighted the significance of health care and the importance of advancing life science and technology for the future. Bracing through the pandemic has been a humbling experience. Whether it be local restaurants’ perseverance or the dining public’s heartfelt support for the industry, the simple act of dining out or ordering takeout has transformed into uplifting stories that brings our community together.”

Lunar New Year is on February 12 this year.

Running from February 8 to 21, the 2021 Dining for the Feast of Fortune series will see several restaurants offer special lunch and dinner menus. Among the culinary highlights: Fortune Terrace Chinese Cuisine’s savoury braised-seafood Bird’s Nest Soup; the Fish Man’s BC Dungeness Crab and Seafood Rice (which symbolizes an abundance of wealth and joy in the new year); and Heritage Asian Eatery’s two-course Peking duck, which comes with abalone siu mai and golden garlic-and-black bean steamed BC oysters.

Hotpot Palace kicks things off with roasted bone marrow before a red-wine infused tomato-oxtail soup base for the hot pot that includes Angus beef house-made cheese meatballs, and more.

Other dining establishments taking part are Bamboo Grove Restaurant, Po Kong Vegetarian Restaurant, Torafuku, and newcomers Joy Café and Hotpot Palace.

The meals can be served for dine-in or take-out, with menus ranging from $38 to $100 per person. For every Feast of Fortune menu served, the restaurants will donate $25 to the cause. Plus, the eateries will donate $25 for every purchase of a $100 gift certificate, which must be used by May 31.

With gifting being an important part of Lunar New Year celebrations, Gifts of Fortune are another way to support the effort. Ordering is now open for the Chinese Restaurant Awards’ limited edition Premium Artisan XO Sauce. It’s made from scratch by Cao Can Hui, executive chef of Dynasty Seafood Restaurant. (A 6.7-ounce jar is $35; 25 percent of proceeds will go to the new St. Paul’s.)

Little Fox Bakehouse pastry chef Eric Ho is making special edition Year of the Ox Macaron Set. (At $16 per box, and $3 from each will be donated.)
