PLANT-BASED JAMAICAN patties, Soul Bowls, and Mandazi mini donuts are some of the items on the menu at the forthcoming Coho x Kula x Elbow Patties Afro-Vegan cookout.

Asha Wheeldon founded Kula in 2018 after noticing a lack of vegan offerings in Vancouver that reflected the cuisine of her native Kenya. Kula means eat in Swahili. Chris Boreland launched Elbo Jamaican Patties in part to connect with his Caribbean heritage. The name Elbo is a combination of his partner’s last name and his own; it’s also a nod to the elbow grease that’s involved in hard work.

They’ll both be serving up dishes such as Soul Bowl, which consists of Mac & Cheeze and Ribz in an edible bowl by Eat The Dishes; Elbo Jamaican Patties in coco bread; Chick’un Sliders with Flour Girl Baking Bun; and East African mini donuts with a drizzle of icing.

To drink is a selection of beers from House of Funk Brewing and fresh lemonade.

Coho Collective’s Street Food series aims to introduce the commissaries’ independent business owners to the community and bring people together through food.

The cookout runs on June 25 and 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. (or until sell out) at Coho Coffee (1370 East Georgia Street). People can dine on the patio or take their food to go.
