SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs is partnering with The Dance Centre to present the world premiere of a vibrant multidisciplinary production celebrating cultural resilience.

PIÑA is choreographed by Ralph Escamillan, a multitalented Vancouver dance artist and artistic director of FakeKnot. Inspired by his own experience as a first-generation Canadian-born Filipinx, it considers the parallels between the physicality of this experience, and piña—a traditional and celebrated Philippine fibre made from pineapple leaves.

Bringing together an all-Philippine cast and a multidisciplinary artistic team, PIÑA is a contemporary dance work which celebrates cultural resilience, incorporating traditional folk dance, history, and design.

“My inspiration for this work came from a desire to learn more about my Philippine ancestry through piña, but what became most compelling for me was finding the threads of diversity that encompass the Philippine experience,” says Escamillan. “I hope this work inspires people to explore the woven fibres that make up their own histories.”

"Experience PINA at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts from May 4 to 6, 2023, with a talkback on May 5 after the show. Get your tickets here.
