DOXA presents free Outdoor Summer Screenings at the VPL Plaza at Robson and Homer Streets at 9 pm on August 12 and 13

SOME OF THE best short films from the 2020 and 2021 renditions of the DOXA Documentary Film Festival are on view Thursday and Friday night at the VPL South Plaza downtown.

Seating is limited on the amphitheatre-like plaza steps, and the fest recommends a blanket or pillow to sit on.

Amid the standouts in this celebration of local filmmaking is the first night’s screening of Lisa Jackson’s mesmerizing Lichen, otherworldly and originally shot in macro 3D. It joins Marina Dodis’s beautifully lensed The Return, focusing on Lower Mainland creeks and how they’re essential to salmon.

The second night, check out films like Joe Buffalo, Amar Chebib’s compelling portrait of the Indigenous skateboard legend and residential-school survivor. And if you missed Koto: The Last Service at this year’s DOXA, here’s your chance to see Joella Cabalu’s story of a family-run Japanese restaurant in Campbell River that’s closing down. (You can read more about that one here.)

There's much more, 11 free films in all spread over the two nights. You can register here (though it's not mandatory) and masks are recommended.
