Firehall Arts Centre's Music in the Courtyard concert series comes back July 30 to September 5
Indie-pop, salsa, classical, jazz, and more on the roster, in copresentation with Vancouver Independent Music Centre
THE FIREHALL ARTS CENTRE courtyard provided the setting for some of the only live-music concerts last summer—and now the outdoor series is back with many more shows for 2021.
Copresented with the Vancouver Independent Music Centre, the 2021 Music in the Courtyard series runs from July 30 to September 5.
Performances for this second edition will take place Wednesdays to Saturdays at 7 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm, with the exception of the concert on Sunday, August 1 at 7 pm.
The roster boasts a diverse array of genres, from classical and jazz to world and electronica. Among the names (pictured above, left to right): soul-hip-hop singer-songwriter Tonye Aganaba (August 15); the salsa, jazz, and Afro-Cuban rhythms of Rumba Calzada (August 22); jazz-trumpet virtuoso Brad Turner and his quartet (August 29); and electronica artist Sara Gold in a special Electronica Night (August 28).
Other names on the roster include the Microcosmos Quartet (August 6), Alpha Yaya Diallo (September 5), and the hand-drum songs of M’Girl, which kicks things off with the opening-night concert. The next night, July 31, celebrated Arabic avant-garde ensemble Haram plays at 7 pm in a copresentation with the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.
On September 2, there’s even a musical-theatre-album performance: Rice & Beans Made in Canada: an agricultural song cycle, originally slated as a live theatre show titled Made in Canada: an agricultural operetta, features 10 songs composed by Mishelle Cuttler.
Ticket prices range from $20 to $40, and go quickly, as performances are limited to 50 patrons; you can find the full roster and buy them in advance starting July 15 at noon at www.firehallartscentre.ca[][1].
