The Cherie Smith JCC Jewish Book Festival presents a Conversation with Colum McCann on May 12 at 6:30 pm PDT online as part of the 18th annual JCC Festival of Israeli Culture.

The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver is inviting the public to a Conversation with Colum McCann, author of Apeirogon, on May 12.

It’s the seventh novel for the acclaimed writer, whose 2009 release, Let the Great World Spin, won a National Book award and was translated into 40 languages.

Apeirogon is based on the true-life friendship of two fathers. Characters Bassam Aramin, a Palestinian, and Rami Elhanan, an Israeli, come together after each has lost a daughter, one to suicide bombers, the other to Israeli police. They recognize the loss and grief that unite them and attempt to use their sorrow as a path to peace.

McCann draws from history, politics, and his own imagination in the novel that goes to the heart of the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

At the JCC event, McCann will sit down with Gary Barwin, author of Yiddish for Pirates (finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize) and Nothing the Same, Everything Haunted—the Ballad of Motl the Cowboy.

This virtual discussion is part of the 18th annual JCC Festival of Israeli Culture, which showcases the multi-ethnicity of Israeli heritage through dance, music, literature, and art. The fest runs until May 30.

Tickets are $18; more information is here.
