Mexican Gothic author Silvia Moreno-Garcia joins PNBA virtual gala, February 10

The Vancouver-based writer’s novel is a New York Times best-seller

The Pacific 2021 Pacific Northwest Book Awards Celebration takes place online on February 10 at 6 pm PST.

VANCOUVER AUTHOR Silvia Moreno-Garcia has another accolade to add to her list: her novel Mexican Gothic (Del Ray) is among the winners of the 2021 Pacific Northwest Book Awards.

Moreno-Garcia is the only Canadian author among the winners.

A New York Times best-seller, Mexican Gothic was named as one of the best books of 2020 by the New YorkerVanity Fair, NPR, and the Washington Post, among numerous other outlets.

Kirkus Reviews called the book a “terrifying twist on classic gothic horror”, while NPR’s Fresh Air described it as “an inspired mash-up of Jane Eyre, Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of UdolphoDraculaRebecca and that 1958 classic sci-fi movie, The Blob.”

The awards are sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association and its 130 independent bookstore members.  

The awards committee is made up of independent booksellers representing the PNBA region of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, and British Columbia.

Moreno-Garcia, whose other novels include Gods of Jade and ShadowCertain Dark Things, and Untamed Shore, will take part in the PNBA celebration on February 10 at 6 pm via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public.

Also joining are the awards’ other winners: Issaquah, Washington’s Donna Barba Higuera, author of Lupe Wong Won’t Dance; Kim Johnson, of Eugene, Oregon, who wrote This Is My America; Seattle’s E.J. Koh, The Magical Language of Others—A Memoir; Tina Ontiveros, of Hood River, Oregon, rough house—a memoir; and Portland’s Aiden Thomas, Cemetery Boys.
