THE POLYGON GALLERY is spreading its love outdoors starting this week, with the launch of its new Deckchair Cinema series on June 23 at 9:30 pm.

The kickoff of the big screen just outside the gallery on Cates Deck features the documentary Carts of Darkness, with the filmmaker in attendance.

The doc, made by sport-film director Murray Siple, focuses on bottle pickers’ cart racing down the steep hills of North Van. Set to feature tracks from Vancouver-spawned bands like Black Mountain, Ladyhawk, and Bison, Carts of Darkness also reveals the human side of the homeless, following them into the parking lots and bushes where they live.

Bring your own blankets or low chairs, as seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a concession stand at the gallery—including local wines and craft brews to enjoy on the licensed deck.

Films run throughout the summer on Thursdays at sundown, with music courtesy of DJs, beginning at 7 pm; Paisley Eva is quite literally “on deck” for this kickoff night. Entry is by donation, which gives you admission to the gallery to see the summer exhibition Ghosts of the Machine.

And mark June 30 on your calendar for the next outdoor screening, of legendary director Agnès Varda’s Cléo From 5 to 7.

Families can head down to the same spot on Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm for Kids First on Cates Deck. First, tour the gallery’s Ghosts of the Machine exhibit, and then participate in craft and mixed-media art projects inspired by the show on the waterfront deck.
