The Vancouver International Wine Festival takes place May 16 to 22 at various venues.

THE VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL Wine Festival may be best known for its International Festival Tastings, where, this year, some 100 wineries from 14 countries will each pour four to five sips of their select wines. However, the 43rd annual fest also offers culinary experiences that explore the art of pairings. Keeners have already nabbed all of the tickets to some, such as Good Karma winery dinner at Vij’s and Penfolds Unbound winery dinner at Five Sails, but there are many others. With Bard on the Beach being VIWF’s charitable beneficiary, here are three food-and-wine events you can still catch for 2022.

Dine Italia

May 21 from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm at La Terrazza

Following a reception with canapes and Mionetto Prosecco Rosé DOC Brut 2021 and Villa Sandi Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG Brut NV, La Terrazza chef/co-owner Gennaro Iorio will be serving up a classic Italian five-course lunch. (No word yet on whether Strozzapreti, the chef’s signature recipe, will be featured.) Among the participating wineries are Casa Gancia (Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie DOC 2020), Tommasi Family Estates (Casisano Rosso di Montalcino 2017), Tolaini (Chianti Classico ‘Vallenuova’ 2019), and Rocca delle Macìe Tenuta Sant’Alfonso Chianti Classico DOCG 2019 (Savian Vini Amarone Della Valpolicella Savian 2015).

A Spring Fling Sunday Brunch

May 22 from 12 to 2 pm at VCC West

This walk-around grazing brunch brings the festival to a close, with a bright, bubbly vibe: to go with hot and cold dishes are sparkling wines and rosés—more than 20 varieties, in fact, including some of B.C.’s best. Among the wines being poured: Bordertown Vineyards and Estate Winery Rosé 2020, Culmina Family Estate Winery Saignée 2020, Dirty Laundry Vineyard Hush Rosé 2021, Frind Estate Winery Brut NV, Monte Creek Winery Living Land Sparkling Rosé 2020, seven stars by Township 7 seven stars Equinox 2017, Unsworth Vineyards Charme de l’île Rosé NV.

To go with are menu items such as roasted vegetable tarts with Okanagan chevre, Portobello mushroom salad roll bites, smoked BC wild salmon on dark rye, yakitori chicken skewers, bacon-wrapped scallops, siu mai (steamed pork) and har gow (shrimp) dim sum, cauliflower-spinach pakoras, and free-range egg frittata. Pepper-crusted AAA Alberta beef top sirloin will be carved in the room and served with rolls, Dijon mustard and horseradish, while sweet include compressed watermelon with fresh mint and Valrhona chocolate profiteroles.

California Wine Beach Party

May 18 from 7:30 to 10 pm at The Chain & Forge

Soak in the Cali vibes at this walk-around evening event focusing on Golden State wines and taking place in a covered venue at Granville Island. Casual bites like surfboard sushi, mini tacos, and sliders will be served alongside Bread & Butter Wines (Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Cabernet Sauvignon 2020), Dave Phinney Wines (Orin Swift Cellars Abstract 2019, Orin Swift Machete 2018), The Prisoner Wine Company (Unshackled Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Unshackled Rosé 2019), Stags’ Leap Winery (Napa Valley Chardonnay 2020), Wagner Family of Wines (Conundrum White 2020, Conundrum Red 2019), and more.
