Vines Art Festival presents We Will Move in X̱epx̱páy̓em/Hadden Park on August 17 at 6 pm

VINES ART Festival’s We Will Move program doesn’t just take dance and other performance into the great outdoors; it connects choreography with nature in fresh new ways.

Performed in the serene, shaded greenspace near Kits Point, the program this year features a new dance installation by Sarah U that’s inspired by the process of moulting in animals and insects. Stratum finds three dancers interacting and moving around a textile creation, inspired by the idea of casting off and transforming into a new stage of life.

Elsewhere dancers Jennifer Aoki and Harmanie Rose’s The Flood that Let to Know Water is a duet that explores themes of trauma, vulnerability, and memory, drawing on the deeply personal stories of two marginalized artists who find solidarity through sharing and moving together.

And performers Nick Benz and Marion Landers merge their Afro-Indigenous mixed heritage and explore gender fluidity through dance forms that fuse African, Indigenous, and European history. The piece speaks to land connection and reconciliation.

There is much more on the roster, from accordion playing to a disklavier piano piece dedicated to the climate emergency. As with all the other pieces, the sets and sea breeze come courtesy of Mother Nature.
