All things azure, as Vancouver Cantata Singers perform BLUE, February 18 at the Annex
Webern, Górecki, and a premiere by Marcel Bergmann, plus more meditations on the serene hue
Vancouver Cantata Singers perform BLUE at the Annex on February 18
EXPECT SERENE IMAGERY of water, sea, and sky as Vancouver Cantata Singers puts together a concert of music themed around the colour blue.
The celebrated choir finds inspiration in music that crosses the past century of more, starting with a new commission by German-born, locally based pianist-composer Marcel Bergmann, “Calling Undine”. Bergmann has created music across film, theatre, and cabaret as well as choral and chamber music.
His premiere mixes with “Shimmering Water” by Bruce Sled, a former bass in the choir, plus Anton Webern’s haunting sea-faring chorus “Entflieht auf leichten Kähnen, Op. 2”.
It joins works by Stanford, Bingham, Barber, Górecki, Delius, Whitacre, and more, all meditating on the emotion and natural beauty of blue. And did we notice the Cantata Singers have hinted they’re also throwing Dolly Parton in the mix? (Our bet’s on “Blue Smoke”.)
Led by Paula Kremer since 2013, the Cantata Singers are known for mixing old and new--a bit like hues of blue on a paint palette. Tickets and more details are available here.
